“Yellowstone Raven” – Matted Print

“Yellowstone Raven”

Open Edition Photographic Print

The raven is steeped in folklore, mystery, and pop-culture. They have been in stories from great writers like Edgar Allen Poe, and crucial to many fabels from Aesop. In some Native American stories, ravens represent creation, knowledge, prestige as well as the complexity of nature and the subtlety of truth. However, in the eyes of the general public today, corvids, like ravens and crows, are generally ignored or thought of with contempt.

But to Tim, and a small segment of the population, ravens are one of the most amazing birds on our planet. Researchers have found that corvids are among the most intelligent animals on Earth; on par with humans, elephants, chimpanzees, and dolphins. Not only do corvids have complex communication skills (including use of thier feet for their own form of sign-language), they also can use abstract thought to plan for their future. They even have the ability to remember specific humans they like – or don’t like – and pass along that knowledge to others. Research has even shown that subsequent generations are able to recognize particular humans years later, even having never seen that person before.

On a late fall day in Yellowstone National Park, Tim and his wife, Stephanie, spent about an hour with this raven on the banks of the Gibbon River. Of the all the photos that Tim took, this pose, with the raven looking to the sky, felt positively optimistic. It was as though the bird was looking to the sky and could see the future – and it knew it was going to be great.
